Drew Moyo – “Vimbuza”
Norway based Malawian Dance/Electronic act; Drew Moyo teams up with Beating Heart; the World’s largest archive of Africa’s field recordings- on his new body of work ‘Vimbuza’.
One of the tracks off ‘Chingoma’
which was sampled after an archival field recording is a favourite of the artist and he explains that ‘Chingoma’
is a drum played specifically by the Tonga people in a part of Malawi when they gather for the Spiritual ritual of the Vimbuza dance.
The proceeds from Vimbuza will be used to support the Women’s Legal Centre in Cape Town and Jo’burg and the AMP music school in Grahamstown where equipment will be donated and a Beating Heart remix module would be developed where students can learn how to remix music from the archive, learning about their heritage in the process.
Now that’s music for a cause!
